We are addressing the urgent need to decarbonise the transport sector, which contributes nearly 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Challenge

Transitioning fleets from (ICE vehicles to ZEVs is critical to achieving net-zero goals. However, this transition faces significant barriers, including:

  • High upfront costs for energy infrastructure and grid upgrades.
  • Peak and demand charges that drive operational energy costs.
  • Limited tools for vehicle selection, operational planning, and emissions tracking.
  • A lack of integrated energy management causes inefficient energy use and downtime.

Beyond EV and NexusCharge tackle these challenges by providing an Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) platform that integrates Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), AI-powered optimisation, and EV management, enabling fleets to transition seamlessly and cost-effectively while reducing their carbon footprints.

Globally:

  • The transport sector is responsible for approximately 8.4 billion tonnes of CO2 in 2023, making it one of the most significant contributors to climate change.
  • Fleet electrification represents a $12 billion market in the USA alone by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 18%.

Locally (Australia):

  • Transport accounts for 18% of Australia’s total emissions, with commercial vehicles significantly contributing.
  • Australia has over 2.5 million commercial vehicles and 97,400 buses, making it a high-potential market for electrification.
  • Solar energy wastage and grid instability in Australia highlights the need for scalable energy storage solutions to utilise renewable energy effectively.

By addressing these challenges, NexusCharge reduces emissions and delivers financial and operational benefits, making the transition to ZEVs viable for fleets globally and locally.

Solution

Our business provides a comprehensive Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) platform, NexusCharge, which integrates Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), AI-powered energy optimisation, EV charging infrastructure, and fleet management software. - Alex Carvajal

By offering modular BESS solutions on a subscription basis, we eliminate upfront infrastructure costs, enabling businesses to adopt sustainable energy practices. NexusCharge empowers businesses to transition to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) while addressing challenges like decarbonisation, grid dependency, and energy inefficiency.

Beyond EV solves critical business challenges while creating significant climate benefits:

  1. High Energy Costs:
  • Problem: Businesses face steep peak demand charges and unpredictable electricity costs.
  • Solution: NexusCharge’s AI-driven platform optimises energy use, shaving peak demand charges by up to 50% and using excess renewable energy stored in BESS to reduce reliance on the grid.
  1. High Upfront Costs:
  • Problem: CAPEX for infrastructure upgrades and energy systems is a barrier to entry.
  • Solution: The BaaS model removes upfront costs by offering BESS solutions on a subscription basis, making fleet electrification financially accessible and scalable.
  1. Operational Inefficiencies:
  • Problem: Businesses lack actionable data for fleet management, energy optimisation, and emissions tracking.
  • Solution: NexusCharge delivers real-time insights into fleet performance, energy usage, and carbon reduction metrics, helping businesses optimise operations.
  1. Carbon Reduction:
  • Problem: Businesses need to decarbonise but struggle to implement effective strategies.
  • Solution: By combining renewable energy storage, carbon abatement tools, and monetisation of carbon credits, NexusCharge supports organisations in achieving and exceeding net-zero goals.
  1. Grid Dependency:
  • Problem: Heavy reliance on the grid for EV charging leads to high energy costs and operational disruptions.
  • Solution: BESS solutions store excess solar energy, reduce grid reliance, and ensure energy availability during peak periods, stabilising operations and the grid.
  1. Grid Instability:
  • Problem: Excess solar energy often goes unused, leading to grid congestion and instability.
  • Solution: NexusCharge’s BESS captures this surplus energy for later use, preventing energy wastage and promoting grid resilience.

By combining BaaS and SaaS in an all-in-one EaaS model, NexusCharge uniquely addresses these pain points, enabling cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable fleet electrification.

Result

We launched Beyond EV in late 2021, initially focusing on installing EV chargers for homes. Shortly after, we shifted our focus to fleet electrification, providing EV charging infrastructure and best practices for organisations, including Melbourne Airport and multiple councils in VIC and NSW. - Alex Carvajal

A significant milestone was the development of our remote energy management system, which we successfully rolled out at multiple sites across Australia. Through this process, we recognised two critical challenges: the need for increased energy capacity to charge multiple vehicles and the prohibitive upfront costs of grid upgrades, coupled with a lack of reliable data to inform decisions.

These insights led us to partner with the RMIT EV Living Lab to co-develop a comprehensive solution addressing these issues. Today, we are deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across several sites in Victoria and New South Wales to refine our software, validate our model, and advance fleet electrification.

Beyond EV has a robust plan to scale NexusCharge, focusing on partnerships, client acquisition, funding, and market expansion. Our strategy includes:

  1. Partnerships: Collaborating with industry leaders such as RMIT EV Living Lab, ABB, TGE, and Net Zero Stack, we aim to strengthen our technology and accelerate deployment. We also plan to establish partnerships with DNSPs, energy providers, and international players in Europe, Canada, and the USA.
  2. Client Acquisition: We target key segments, including logistics fleets, bus operators, government agencies, and energy retailers, with a goal of securing 20 new clients in Australia by Q4 2025. Our solution addresses the specific needs of heavy vehicle charging hubs, forecourts, and large-scale fleet electrification.
  3. Audience Segments: Expanding into additional markets such as mining, agriculture, and commercial real estate, we plan to develop tailored solutions that cater to industry-specific energy and fleet management requirements.
  4. Funding: Leveraging grants such as IGP ($500,000), CRC-P ($3M), and ARENA Driving the Nation ($10M), we aim to scale operations and refine our software. Further private investments and revenue from pilot projects will support our growth.
  5. Technology and Deployment: Our focus is on deploying NexusCharge’s EaaS model at 50+ sites domestically by 2026, achieving $35M in ARR. We also aim to scale internationally by Q3 2025, leveraging our modular, AI-driven platform for rapid adoption.
