Early-stage battery startup Voltavate secures pre-seed raise.

Voltavate story

Melbourne renewables battery startup Voltavate has raised $850,000 in a pre-Seed round to make lithium-ion batteries and energy storage devices safer, more efficient and sustainable.

The round was led by Artesian, with support from Investible, Electrifi Ventures, and angel investors John Wood (Noab Ventures), Christiaan Jordaan (Siconna), and Steven Vassiloudis (Novalith), as well as the startup’s chair, Reza Behnam.

Voltavate was founded in 2023 by Dr Amir Hooshang Taheri and Omid Javad as a battery innovation platform to address critical challenges in performance, manufacturing efficiency, and sustainability in energy storage value chain.

Its first product line focuses on battery separators — a critical component influencing cell safety, efficiency, and scalability – using cost-effective electrode-coated nanofibre separator technology.

The funding will go towards product validation, team expansion, and strategic partnerships.

Taheri said the technology will be applicable across electric vehicles, grid storage, and emerging battery chemistries.

“We’re incredibly grateful to be backed by investors and thought leaders who share our mission,” he said

Their support gives us the momentum to scale and deliver real impact in how batteries are made and perform.”

His chairman and investor Reza Behnam said he’d worked closely with the duo since Voltavate’s early days.

“Their clear vision and tireless work have led to a solution that outperforms current best practices.,”

“This oversubscribed round, led by Artesian, reflects their potential to shape the industry. I look forward to supporting the team as they move toward industrial-scale execution.”

The climate tech startup has been involved in StartSpace, Climate Salad, EnergyLab, New Energy Nexus, and CDL Melbourne, and is now seeking interest from commercial partners and potential collaborators as it looks to exploring expand into Southeast Asia.

Artesian partner Alexandra Clunies-Ross: “Voltavate is tackling a vital part of the battery value chain with strong technical insight and clear execution. We’re excited to support the team’s vision for next-generation component manufacturing.”
